During the 1800’s in the Northwest Territories of what is now Saskatchewan and Alberta, Chief Mistawasis was referred to as “Iron Buffalo of the Plains”.
The buffalo; in those days provided sustenance and materials for shelter, clothing, and tools for those who lived in the Plains of Western Canada. Chief Mistawasis was given this name because he was a strong and respected leader who provided for the people.
Now in the 21st Century, Mistawasis Nêhiyawak provides for the people through enhanced education, training and employment programs and services; thus, the Iron Buffalo Centre. With continuing and new partners, we will track the legacy of Iron Buffalo.
